Cxliii. the Polyuronide Constituents of Forage Grasses
نویسنده
چکیده
DURING the past few years, an extended study has been made in these laboratories of the chemistry of certain constituents of the forage grasses, the nitrogenous substances and the fats and waxes having received particular attention. Samples of a number of grasses of pure strain and known history being available, the opportunity was taken to examine the cell-wall substances of certain of these. Detailed information on the chemistry of these substances is extremely scanty, being limited to such rather empirical data as "crude fibre," "pentosan" and cellulose content of the tissues; in view of the importance of the cell-wall materials from the standpoint of nutritional value and digestibility of the crops, a much more detailed study seemed to be called for. The polyuronides (pectins and hemicelluloses) of cocksfoot grass have been examined in some detail, while a number of analyses of the chief cell-wall and other carbohydrate constituents of other grasses, grown under comparable conditions, are recorded.

Genetic Engineering for the Improvement of Forage Grass Quality
The forage quality of warm season perennial grasses grown in the Southern States, subtropics, and the tropics is often inadequate and is a major limitation to satisfactory animal performance. Quality improvement of those warm season grasses has been a high priority research objective in breeding programs. Hammond (1987) pointed out that C4 tropical and subtropical grasses generally have lower q...
متن کاملMechanisms of drought stress tolerance in cool season grasses
Drought stress is one of the most limiting abiotic stresses affecting growth, production and survival of plants in many areas of the world, and is expected to intensify considering the trend of climate change. Grass species are important for the sustainability of agricultural systems, forage resources for animal farming and landscapes. Grass species adapt to water deficit by different morpholog...
متن کاملThe Effects of Deferred Grazing System on Vegetation Parameters in Semi-Arid Rangelands (Case Study: Jashlubar, Semnan, Iran)
Rangeland management plan is one of the major means of management and utilization of rangelands in Iran. The formulation of these plans for the rangeland users should be studied from the ecological and socio-economic points of view. One of the main envisaged activities in almost all the management plans is the grazing system. An experiment was used to study the effects of three deferred grazing...
متن کاملCxciii. the Composition of Forage Crops
MANY papers dealing with the composition and digestibility of forage crops are to be found in the literature, but the analyses are usually restricted to those few groups included in the conventional methods of agricultural analysis. These rarely extend beyond the determination of ash, or mineral constituents, crude protein, crude fibre and ether-soluble material. The sum of these analyses is fa...
متن کاملEstimation of Nutritive Values of Some Range Species as Indicators for Rangelands Management
Information on different rangeland plants’ nutritive values during variousphonological stages is of importance for the rangelands management. This information helpsrangeland managers to choose proper grazing times to achieve higher animal performancewith no detrimental effects on the rangeland vegetations. Effects of various plant parts’phenological stages and vegetation types on reserve carboh...
